What in the world followed me home ... ?
Don't have any use for it, but I thought it was cute ..
The 3-71 blower was a critical component of the
Detroit Diesel Series 71 engines, which first appeared in the late 1930s.
Because these are two-stroke diesel engines, they require a blower to force air into the cylinders for the combustion cycle to function.
Hot rod enthusiasts discovered that these industrial blowers could be adapted to gasoline V8 engines to provide massive power gains.
- Hot Rodding: The 3-71 blower is a popular choice for smaller displacement engines, such as: ...
- Flathead Ford V8s
- Small Block Chevys
- (SBC)Inline 6-cylinder engines (e.g., Ford 250 Crossflow)
As far as the 3-71 working on a Big Block Chevy goes it won't work well at all ..
The blower would have to spin extremely fast to provide adequate boost to the large engine. This over-spinning generates excessive heat, reduces efficiency, and places considerable stress on the blower's components, leading to diminished performance and potential reliability issues.
For BBC engines , a 6-71 or 8-71 blower (originally designed for 426 ci and 568 ci diesels respectively) or a modern equivalent like a B&M 250 are more appropriately sized to provide efficient boost without being overworked.
On that note .. Not really thinking about forced induction for the Binder, but if a 6-71 follows me home it just may find a home under the hood of the Binder ..
Looks like there may be room for the hood to close ..
Ya never know what's around the next curve in the road .. ??
