Only problem I have had with my 6.4 was the front cover, casting issue that caused a leak. But I only have a little over 50k miles right now. Thats hauling a 20k pound truck down trails we call "roads" around here every day.

If it needs mods to operate correctly...it's terrible.

2 things, 1 they redesigned the V10 to fix the spark plug issue in 05. #2 if you find a truck older than 05 with a V10 that hasn't had an issue yet with the spark plugs you can pretty safely bank on the fact that it won't develop an issue now.
If he finds a nice diesel and it happens to be a 6.0L, budget for a head stud upgrade and egr delete, then 85% of those engines problems is taken care of. If the price is right i`d go that route. Also in 2005 they went to a variable vane turbo which made better low end power (better but still some lag) Only bad thing i have heard about the V10s is they occationally blow out spark plugs from the heads, which can be an expense that you may never have, but be aware of. Also changing spark plugs is biotch on those gas jobs aswell, but if you know someone who has done it before make sure to set them up with a case of beer and your golden.
Thats about as much as I know, i`d easily pick the 6.8l over the 5.4l for power, you might give up 1-2mpg over the little one in a truck that big.
too many haters and too many people that think the 7.3 is gods gift to man and want to charge you for it

Yeah...that's it. It couldn't be that the 6.0 is a colossal POS due to Ford's insistence on having it look good only on paper and that it replaced a damn near bullet proof, proven engine that could be re-tuned and STILL not break.
