Ok so I have a question for my cousin.

He wants to buy a F250 super duty within the next few months most likely 99-04

So the question is that he drives 60 miles round trip mostly hwy to and from work so what motor should he be looking at? I know diesels get better mileage but won't knowing that maintainance is pricey should he be looking at gas??

He likes the V10 though. With a tuner from mike at 5 star he could probably get 15MPG plus. Right or wrong on this??

5.4 and 6.8 will get almost the same mileage from everything I have heard, and the 5.4 is a total dog in this heavy of a truck. If he goes gas, I would recommend the v10, an 05+ would be best since they addressed some issues in 05.

If he can find a 99-03 7.3 diesel, they are pretty bullet-proof and will last forever, even though they are not as powerful as the newer ones. The 6.0 PSD has been pretty problematic, so it would be really hit or miss on them.

If he finds a nice diesel and it happens to be a 6.0L, budget for a head stud upgrade and egr delete, then 85% of those engines problems is taken care of. If the price is right i`d go that route. Also in 2005 they went to a variable vane turbo which made better low end power (better but still some lag) Only bad thing i have heard about the V10s is they occationally blow out spark plugs from the heads, which can be an expense that you may never have, but be aware of. Also changing spark plugs is biotch on those gas jobs aswell, but if you know someone who has done it before make sure to set them up with a case of beer and your golden. :D

Thats about as much as I know, i`d easily pick the 6.8l over the 5.4l for power, you might give up 1-2mpg over the little one in a truck that big.

V10s will spit spark plugs and the 6.0 diesel is a very expensive nightmare.

Find a 99-03 7.3 and he will be a very happy person.

On a somewhat related side note:

We are looking to get rid of our 6.0 PSD powered ambulance. While asking the local Road Rescue dealer about the cost associated with doing a remount (replace the chassis of an ambulance but keep the patient compartment), they showed me a remount they just completed. The ambulance service got rid of their 2006 Ford PSD because they had racked up over $40K in repairs and maintenance costs over 5 years. They bought a new Chevy Duramax chassis.

6.0/6.4 PSDs are terrible.

I wouldn't say terrible, given the mods that are out to take care of some of the inherent issues. I have read some pretty cool solutions, right here on this site.

If it needs mods to operate correctly...it's terrible.
