yes I was going to get started here in the next 2 weeks, worst time of year for this,

also, got a call from a reputable engine swap place, says they have a new, not rebuilt, gm crate 4.3 for $2000....$500 install, I'll see if I can work him down, but I bet I'm still gonna find the best deal when shcrams gets back with me tomorrow.

v8 has too much other stuff needed to be running and I don't have that kinda dough on top of whatever it would cost to get a v8.
holy crap! $2500 for a new crate 4.3 that is insane! Let me see what I can find in your area. Where are you in Michigan?

Except that the 350 is likely to do better on gas than the 4.3 :(

That's why my dads '93 Suburban with a 350 got better gas mileage than my Blazer

I have a 2006 4.3 in a "FULL SIZE WORK VAN."
It is always loaded with my work stuff.
Around 1000 pounds of cargo at all times.

It gets a consistent 17 or so here in town, and close to 20 on the highway.
I think that is pretty good for as much weight as it is pulling. :dunno:

I don't see where a 350 would get any better than that.

I have had "3" previous 4.3's before this one.
They all got about the same mileage.

oh.... and with a BlackBear tune....it runs fairly decent also. :) :) :)

I think the BB tune makes the difference for you
Though, not a whole bunch... I'm averaging about 14 with mine right now... But I've been lead footing it a lot lately... On the highway I'm about 17 - 18... That was about 80 - 90 MPH through the mountains
Unloaded on the highway, doesn't seem to get any worse after about 17-ish... I can sometimes squeak a high 18.x or 19 out if it going the speed limit... But for the extra 1MPG it's not worth it

The tune didn't really do anything for the mileage.
It did help a good bit on the power and the way it runs.

Remember my van is real tall and catches a "LOT" of wind.
There is nothing aerodynamic about it at all. :) :)

My highway driving is usually around 80 MPH...
Around town it is a mix of stop and go residential driving and pretty congested freeway driving.

All in all, I think it gets pretty good mileage for what it is and the way I drive it.
In all honesty, I feel that a 350 V8 would get maybe 14 MPG in my type of town driving and maybe 16/17 on the highway in this big ol' heavy van running at 80 MPH.

Just use that http://car-part.com/ and search 4.3 for any GMT900 and there are a gazillion pullout motors. There are definitely a few that have under 20k miles and are under a grand. I would go that route instead of the $2500 for a new crate. Could save yourself a thousand bucks.

that was my plan, already searched, 3 possibilities were listed in a earlier post on this thread,,,,one I like the sounds of, 23 miles from here, 33,000 out of a 2003 silverado. Gonna check into it tomorrow..along with schrams guess they are pure gm stuff and my gm tech buddy recommended I check em out, also harry and son's auto

should have more details and where I'm headed by tomorrow afternoon....

2003
Engine
Chevy Blazer S10/Jimmy S15/Typhoon(4.3L, VIN X, 6-262)-14K,14,000 $850Fredd's Auto Salvage USA-MI(Saginaw)
(maybe he can truck it here for a relatively cheap cost)

2003
Engine
Chevy Truck Silverado 15004.3,AUTO ,RWD,10/02,RUNS GOOD,4.3L (VIN X, 8TH DIGIT)- (VIN X, 8thdigit)33,000 $800Fox Auto Parts USA-MI(Belleville)

I'm just not sure about these dealers and the quality, I don't trust anyone...

Ok well I put a $150 deposit on the 33,000 still in a silverado complete engine.

Still a little leary as I want to go see it if it's still in a truck, working.

They want a total of $1040 to cover it with a 1 year parts and labor

I said no to that, 90 day parts only, and they want $500 + fluids to swap it in.

I found a tow guy lic. ins. , 35 mile trip from my house to belleville $100

$1400 + is way better than $2500+

I called several places, most had way more miles, most of them were rude,

and only the one I wanted and the saginaw one would install for $500.

Saginaw is just too far to have it hauled. Even if I got it and hauled it here, would still have to haul it somewhere as I need someone to install it, and I let my buddy off the hook. Plus they have all the stuff to do it, maybe stuff my buddy doesn't...don't want to get skee-rude for more time and money.... just want in and out...

UPDATE....gonna get it towed for free!!!! AAA woohooo!!!!! -$100 = $1300 + fluids

Damn...sorry bout your engine.

As for your replacement, I too would be leary of these places. It the engine is still in the truck and they can run it, all the better. If anything, make sure your scrutinize everything.
