Well, the "tapping the battery cable" statement leads me to believe it is a cable issue. I would start there.

I agree but where should I start? Im thinking of replacing the positive cable it's just $12.00 bucks give me more ideas. Advance has Delco Remy starters I wonder if O'Rielly's will return my money for the new Ultra starter I have on my truck?

Again I hate for me not trusting my truck when im out and about or mostly on a trip which I have one coming up.
Thanks again! Roland :tmc:

It is very odd to go through as many starters as you are talking about. Not saying this one ISN'T bad but I would definitely go for a new battery and cables first. I have had more than one junk side post in a GM style battery.
Remove the starter and have it tested while you are doing all of this. While you are doing cables, do a "Big 3" upgrade since you have all that high powered stereo gear. You can find the details here on the site.

I would agree on the cables. Due to the age of your truck, I would definitely replace them. And if you bring in the starter to get tested, it will test as good because its only acting up when its hot. I had the same problem trying to get them to replace my starter. I finally just sucked it up and bought a new one. But perhaps if the solenoid on your was to :quote: accidentally get fried, then they would have to warranty it.
So new cables, new starter, and a new battery if yours fails a load test. Then you should be good to go. Also, if your battery is more than 4 years old, I would replace it regardless. I know how the Texas heat can be brutal to a battery.

New cables are a very good idea. I have run that course as well only to find the cables where messed up inside the cable under the sheathing.

Hey guys what is the BIG 3? Im going to see if I can get my money back from O'Rielly's and buy a Delco Remy starter from Advance Auto Parts and go ahead and put on a new positive battery cable.

My battery is good I did a load test on it and it checked ok.

Say guys I was thinking my starter has one shim on in and after the starter was put on when I got home I turned off my truck and I noticed that when I went to cranking it over it sounded like if the starter wanted to keep turning so im thinking maybe I need to remove the shim because when hot the bendix swells and that's what making it not turn over when hot here in Texas. Any thoughts on my brain storm and again what is the BIG 3??
Thanks again! Roland :tmc:

Scott thank you so very much. To be honest I don't know how the wires go from my starter to the column does anybody have a drawing that would really help me out I would love to up-grade to bigger wires because I was thinking im loosing some volts/amps im not good at this stuff.
Thanks again! Roland :tmc:
PS-With the wire I have coming from solinoid when it doesn't want to turn over I just tap the wire on positive post and it starts which makes me think that just that little extra volts turns the solinoid but im no expert at this stuff.

Sounds like it is time for a new ignition switch, then. I don't think I would go replacing wire unless you see an obvious problem with the harness. Replace the ignition switch, itself.

I have never actually seen or replaced the ignition switch in a GMT400, but a quick Google shows it is the same type I was thinking of:

Back again with up-date and help on wire size. OK guys in some other post I wrote the small wire coming off my positive battery cable that goes into cab that supplies power to starter switch and solinoid had green crud on it well years ago I replaced so much of it because of the same problem well last week I bought some marine butt connectors to redo the wire I used well when I cut the wire I seen green crud in it again but on the original wire so I cut off a little more well just yesterday I was driving around in this Texas heat and the starter gave me no problems so today I bought nine feet of 8 gauge wire but it's speaker cable/wire with a lot of strands compare to the factory wire well that has thicker strands but not as much as this wire so I called the auto parts store because I was going to buy the same type of wire but they said it should be fine.

Do you guys agree that all should be fine the wire is nice and thick but might it melt the insulation off the wire is soft? I think I should be fine since I can run it away from any heat as it is now. Say thanks for all your help you guys & gals are great.
Be safe! Roland
