We live in a rural area on a dirt road which gets snowy/muddy/rough pretty often (in a normal year). We have had cars, and they just get beaten to death out here, not to mention they are not able to get around at all when the conditions get bad, so having a 4x4 around is a necessity. We COULD live with an older 4x4 then I could have a little car as a commuter, but I have not quite been willing to make that sacrifice yet. I like driving my truck, so the financial tradeoff of doing so hasn't quite swayed me to get rid of it yet. It is not paid for, and I would take a loss on selling it at this time so unless what I am spending on fuel rises to the point where it would cover the loss on the sale plus the cost of acquiring another 4x4, I probably won't end up in a small car. I have run the numbers multiple ways, including buying a small used car in addition to the truck, and I am not to the point that it makes sense YET. That could always change......

Gas is honestly killing me now! I am paying $75-80 every 6-7 days compared to my old job that I drove 10miles round trip

Now I drive 50 miles round trip

I have a 50 mile daily commute but car pool with my roommate (fans of Grandma's Boy will get the joke) in an 04 Malibu that gets 30+ on the highway. Anything farther than that trip to work though and we take the Jeep or my dad's Sierra. Do take the Jeep to work sometimes though...

Up until about a month ago, I was driving about 110 miles round trip to work. I got my hands on an 06 civic coupe, and with an injen cold air and magnaflow cat back, its getting 38-40 mpg, depending on how hard I beat on it, and its fun to drive. The bike gets 50 mpg too, and thats a blast to drive as well.. I guess my fix for the cost of gas is to just get more toys :D

Trucks are cool. This thread is not meant to bash em at all... just a friendly discussion. This affects us all some.

Mine is paid for, it's not going anywhere. :D

Besides, fitting the two of us, two dogs (one near 100lbs) and all of our gear and getting us to the lake every weekend isn't something I want to do in a smaller vehicle.

BUT, we do have the 30+mpg Jetta for those time when it's just she and I.

Paid for is exactly why my truck is not going anywhere!

I'll cut down on some of the local commutes and start driving the wife's Odyssey on the longer vacation trips again...
