Well this might be the last trip for my canoe. Took it out to Canyon a few days ago but on my way back I hit a surprise rock that punched a hole. Patched it up with some marine silicone but I'm not sure I should keep running the longtail on it. The weight and tendency to hit bottom are just pushing the plastic beyond its purpose. It still floats just fine but I think the long tail should be moved to one of the other boats and leave this one for the less demanding trolling motor.
Put the canoe on C-list today for $300 hoping I can get a decent return and upgrade to something with more metal in it.
Anyway...the trip.
One thing about having an aquatic bio degree with some emphasis in limnology, I can give you a dozen reasons why that day was perfect for a photo oriented lake trip. The main one being how SMOOOOOOOOTH it was!
Got on the water mid morning on the north side of the lake about 3/4 away from the dam. Since the lake was perfectly smooth, I jetted across to the south side and started trolling. Didn't even see a fish.
Ended up trolling over 10 miles. While I was on the lower end of the lake, I decided to check out "The Canyon Lake Gorge" which is where a giant flood overwhelmed the spillway and literally washed it away. With no protective outlet, a deep gully was cut.
Didn't venture too far because I could feel the cold, beady eyes of somebody with binoculars on the ridge.
After that, I swung by the dam.
From there I decided that fishing was pointless and decided to cruise back. Early on this leg I hit a rock relatively hard but didn't think anything of it. But then I saw a flock of sea gulls and decided to snap some pictures. That is when I noticed I was slowly gaining water in the boat. Like usual, I also got blown into some trees and had to do some work to get free enough to start the engine. From there it was WOT to the boat ramp with the drain plug open.
