It isn't a TDI buy my 91 Jetta IDI diesel has 240k on everything but the engine which I had rebuilt at 150k due to a bad head and low oil pressure issue.

The GTD/IDI is another great source of info on VW diesels.

$9 grand will buy a lot of gas for the truck, not counting the extra insurance and maintenance.

Actually based off of miles a year and my mpg I'd spend about $6,500yr just to work and back in the GMC. so it would pay for itself in a year and half

The TDI will still burn fuel, so you have to account for that and the additional insurance/maintenance/repairs on an additional vehicle as well. IF you get twice the fuel mileage, it will take at least 3.5 to 4 years to pay for the car. You might recap a little more from reduced depreciation on the truck, so you could say 3 to 3.5 years MAYBE. I guess it all comes down to what you want and what you are willing to spend.

I have tried to figure out how to incorporate a less expensive commuter into my "fleet" for a few years now, and the only way it makes sense for me is to dump my truck and buy a small car and an older beater truck. This still ends up costing me a fair chunk of change in the short term since I would lose money on the truck if I sold/traded now. I drive about 25-30k miles a year and average about 16-17 mpg.

Here's my example......

25k miles, 16 mpg, 3.50 gas = $5468.75/year (with the truck)
25k miles, 40 mpg, 3.80 diesel = $2375/year (with a 40 mpg TDI car)

Savings = 3093.75/year......that is $257/month. Unless I can buy a small car that will not cost me over this amount (payment, interest, tires, oil, repairs, insurance, etc) per month, then there are no savings. This also assumes that I basically never drive my truck, which is not a reasonable assumption.

Even if you financed the $9k car for 4 years, just the payments on the car would be $200+ per month, so it would be tough to materialize any actual savings.

A Jetta TDI is not bad at all, altough I'd rather get one with the DSG transmission instead of a manual

Despite some head gasket and overheating issues, the IDIs are some of the most dependable engines that were ever released in compact cars.

Yea I know, I've been crunching numbers all week last week. Think my best bet is a cavalier I found with 40k for 5,700. Think thats a good deal I could pay for in cash lol. It's not really about saving gas money as much as wearing out my gmc before I pay it off.
