Re: Camming the kid's 5.3

Everyone has really touched base on what I was going to say. I think the 269 cam is perfectly fine for a mediumish 5.3 build. It's bigger than Dan has in his 6.0. Pair it with a 3k stall and it will move very nicely.

Que? Peep the signature, sir.

The 212/218 with a stock converter in a RCSB would be pretty fun. Won't have a whole lot off the line, but that's not a horrible thing as far as traction goes. Any reason you're going to do rod bolts on such a mild/simple setup? Most guys don't do the rod bolts unless they're going to be boosted, or spinning the crap out of the engine (I'm still on the stockers). Also, how man miles are on the 5.3?

I'm an idiot, don't mind me. I thought urs was smaller than that.

Yeah, rod bolts aren't really needed.

Well, if I end up with this thing in the end, it will need them :ninja:
Nah, you will be swapping in a 6.0

Thanks, Jenna! I will email you the shopping list when we have it compiled  Any other opinions from you and Justin would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't read through the whole thread to see what other plans you have for the truck, but I would take that all into account. When I installed the cam on my Tahoe, I knew a blower was in the near future. I also know I did not want a loud idle (yes I hate lope) and I wanted something that would not ruin my 40 min commute (for a mere 8 miles).

This cam was great with the LTs had a nice idle too, here is an old video for an idea:

The best advice I could give on a cam, is to call the company you want to go with, tell them what you want out of it, and have them recommend a grind.

Decent power gain over stock, before the boost?

Unless it's Comp.

When I was researching cams I called them, and the guy said, "Well, if it's a 4x4, I'd go with the 212/218, nothing bigger."

"Why?", I asked him. "I'm planning on running a converter with a 3000 rpm stall speed."

He responded with, "A 3000 rpm stall on the STREET!? You'll burn up your trans before you know what happened!"

I promptly thanked him for his time, hung up, and had Pat G spec me a cam. I've heard similar stories about the Comp guys from other people, they don't seem to know how to spec a cam for a truck.

Definite gains, but the cam was installed with the LTs, so it was a multitude of things all at once.

You need a supercharger, for towing of course.
