Hello Folks, New guy here. Cool site , I have been lurking around for a couple days. I found this site while searching for information on an engine I am building. It is a 305 GMC V-6 Built in the 60s-70s. I am having difficulty finding any information on it. I am currently stuck at timing the cam. I have built many engines over the years and have never seen anything as weird. The majority of the V engines I have built with the exception of diesels. Its as simple as lining up the dots. I have a hunch this 305 is as well the line up the dot thing. But I just can`t put it together without being sure. Years ago I put a 57 Ford 312 together thinking you just line up the dots. But when we went to fire it up, it was sucking in the exhaust pipe and blowing out the carb. I don`t wanna do that again! Thank you, Brian.

So far as I can find, just line up the dots...

The old service manual stated to have the crank shaft dot on top, and the cam gear on the bottom, which is 180* from normal. The distributor should be at cylinder #4... Then rotate the engine to TDC and the timing marks should line up.

Supposedly this was easier than just using TDC.

That old 305

Thank you for the info. I thought that was the way to go. I will time it as stated. If I can figure out how to post pics. I will do so after I get it running. "B"

Which GMC 305 v6 do you have? 305E, 305C or 305M? The numbers are stamped in front of the block on the passenger around the head area. I have 69 GMC medium duty with the 305M. All info I been finding on it that it should have 4 piston rings since its a medium duty truck engine. 1 one oil ring and 3 compression rings. I'm actually part of 60-70's GMC forum that deal with the GMC 305 v6 stuff.

Yes Dave, I have the "E" It has two compression rings and one oil. I remember my father worked on the V-12 version of these ------- things. The one I am building is from a company I work for servicing there lift trucks. I am currently searching for a timing set. I will post pics. as soon as I figure out how. LOL!

Check out Rock Auto, they have a pretty good parts list for that engine.

I had one in my parts truck way back when I was putting my 64 GMC together. Ran but I didn't want to put it in my shortbed truck. If I remember right. Do a search for 60-66 guy and you should find his sight and that is all that sights about. Don't ever ask them about doing a small block swap they don't like that to well over there. Another good parts source is kanter but they aren't cheep. Good luck and hope you get her going.
