Snap-On Tools?

I am a broke college student yet I would like to get another set of sockets. I currently have a Kobalt Set, that has been nothing but great performance. I want to put those back in the truck toolbox and get a decent set of sockets, and some open end wrenches (probably ratcheting)

My good buddy that I've grown up with just starting working with a guy that sells Snap-On tools, he's a great guy and knows his stuff he covers 3 counties around here for the paper mills, concrete plants etc...

So my question to y'all is are Snap-On tools worth the extra $100-$200 over Kobalt? I hear the mechanics of the interiors are much smoother but besides that what else am I getting? I know they are good tools, but really $250 for a standard set?

Opinions? Scott I know you have some experience with Snap On IIRC

No, you are paying for brand name, buy Craftsman Pro. tool's, work just as good, and have the same life time warrenty, IMO.

agreed buy craftsman. theyre the same thing but just dont cost you your life to buy. only way im gonna get snap on or something other than craftsman is when i buy a new box (used) if they come with the box

I own many snap-on tools (other brands too) and while they do make great stuff, I'd suggest getting something else with warranty that's a bit cheaper unless you plan on making a living with them. If that's the case, then that's another story.

Like Scott I have thousands and thousands of dollars of Snap On tools. But I also have thousands of dollars worth of Craftsman tools as well. If I were in your shoes Jeff, I would get either Craftsman or Kobalt. They offer the same warranty as Snap On and are just as reliable.

they are awsome tools for sure, they are worth it for their impact sockets and related tools, snap on prybars are great, but personally i have craftsman,mastercraft and procore wrenches, way cheaper when you loose them, or need to make a custom wrench for those odd applications. plus a lifetime warranty. if i paid that much for a set of wrenches i`d be pretty pissed to loose even one.

It's been said already but unless you're using them to make a living the price isn't really worth it. I own a couple snap on ratchets because I have had terrible luck with craftsman ratchets but outside of that there are other brands with the same or nearly the same quality for home use that cost much less.

One of the biggest selling points for mechanics and such is that the truck comes to them so they don't have to chase all over town for a tool they need. Sometimes convenience is worth the price.

i agree, their rachets are worth the extra $$. it is conveinient for them to come over, it seems like every time they show up my mind goes blank looking at all the tools and i forget what i really need.

I have thousands invested in tools. Like said before unless you use them everyday to earn a living dont spend the extra money. Snap-on wrenchs and sockets are better IMO. But I have a lot of craftsman. I am slowly replacing my craftsman wrench's with snap-on just because they are less likely to slip or round off bolts. Another thing to consider is unless you have a snap-on dist. near you or that you see weekly its a pain to get them warranteed.
