I think it would look good, personally I hate how the red clashes with most paint colors. You should consider it, and maybe clearing the front ones too.
My wife's car has a bowtie in the tail light. Gm put it there...

I've thought about clearing the fronts, but don't feel like tearing the whole front end apart and then cutting the headlights open.

Not at all! The thinner width tails look amazing smoked. The '99 - '02 tails look awful compared to the '03 - '06 models which are clear red transparent with red signal blinker. But your truck would pull the look off very well.
