Put 60 miles on it. Debating whether or not to keep it for next winter. There are several things that should be done to it and I can't decide if I'd rather keep this one or sell it and put some money into a 4x4 S10 just like it. If I keep it, it needs shocks, a coolant flush & fill, and a posi/truetrac whichever I find first/decide to spend the money on. I think this truck means more to my dad than it does me. Mostly because he's the one that found it....unlike the first S10 that I never told him about until 2 days after I got it.
As a general question, do you think this truck with a Posi in it or a S10 just like it with 4x4 would be better for the winter? I guess the main question is would a Posi make a big difference in the snow or not? I'd be looking at a 2mpg drop going to a 4x4 (1mpg is probably due to a 4x4 having at least 3.42 gears VS my current 3.08's).
We don't get a posi, we get a locker.
Well, this truck has 3.08's which are considered a 2-series gear and all I was finding were Posi's. If I installed something, I was thinking a TrueTrac. I just don't want to deal with the clutches of a posi. And I don't want a Detroit Locker since it is locked all the time, unlike the factory G80. If it's a 5-speed, you have the 8.5" not the 7.2, look at 1/2 ton options, or ZR2 rear diff options.
Anywho... You'll definitely get a traction increase, but 4x4 on the S-Series doesn't really change gas mileage a large amount...
A traction increase with a locker/posi in a 2wd or just getting a 4x4? Heck, if I kept a 4x4 version that was in good shape, I'd probably put a locker/TrueTrac in it and make it even better! Both would give better traction... But a locker/LSD only helps if you only have one wheel losing traction... If both tires are on ice, it doesn't do anything.
Heck, if you're easy on the throttle there's no difference
The mileage change is from the 3.42's
Yeah Dennis, I've compared MPG ratings from every year from 94-03. There's a drop of 2 in the city and 3 on the highway. And I was pretty sure it was all do to the gearing. The 4.3 isn't the most efficient motor, but it sure gets the little truck moving! You'll probably do better in real life than on paper... I do. 3.42's in a pickup will scoot pretty good... My Blazer is much better now that it's been tuned, and has the new coil/wires.
And you'll get an increase in city driving mileage.
Well, the truck does see mostly city driving in the winter anyways. I'll be going to 4.10s when I do the rest of my stuff
