The U.S. automakers are making an average of $39.00 an hour for all pay and benefits, the foreign ones are averaging $35.00 an hour for pay and benefits. Figure that they work 40 a week, 52 weeks a year and that brings the total to just over $81k a year. Slightly less than the over $100k entitlement.

I'd like to see some facts to back that up. That is a LOT less than I've seen in print for UAW union worker pay.

I assure you that there is a lot more difference between the union and non union shops.

“The United Autoworkers Union has worked hard to create high paying jobs for their members. According to the Indianapolis Star, base wages average about $28 an hour. The average reaches $39.68 an hour, including base pay, cost-of-living adjustments, night-shift premiums, overtime, holiday and vacation pay. Health-care, pension and other benefits average another $33.58 an hour, bringing the total compensation to $61.58 to $73.26 per hour. That's worse.

Add up what you make an hour/salary plus all your benefits and see what you work out as. I work for myself so I have to pay for everything myself and I see where it all goes. I make more than twice as much as those guys per hour and I bring in less than $100k a year, but I have to pay my own taxes, insurance, investments .... you get the picture.

The average worker there makes 82,500 before benefits. How can you claim to make twice as much but not make 100K?

Your right, I make well over 100k, but I bring home less than 100k after everything. I'm sure you think that you are paid an appropriate amount of money, why don't you figure out what you make plus all your benefits and see where you stand after that.

I'm a college educated VP and a member of our Board of Directors.

I don't think comparing apples to bulldozers makes sense here.

These guys are making more in base and more in benefits than a lot of my engineers.

Perhaps you would not be a good candidate for a comparison  but you could still do the exercise and compare the percentage difference. The point is that make and take home are 2 different numbers and take home is much less than we really realize.

But take-home is not what people's salaries are based on. Everyone deals with the same thing when it comes to taxes. Even so, if you compare their individual take-home to the average American, they are making more than most families.

They aren't making more because their jobs are harder, they are making more because the UAW is holding the manufacturers hostage for more than they deserve.

That's more like it. The entitlements and pensions are the back breaker here... and there are a LOT of retirees sucking that money up as well who no longer contribute anything to the operation of the system.

Cost is cost. No matter where it is going or for what.

I spent the last 4.5 years of my life getting my ass handed to me and put out thousands in student loans.....and that's more than I'll be making in base pay. In about 11 years of steady raises I'll be there. Should have went to tech.
