If I'm correct in assuming that hot water comes into contact with the transmisson fluid lines. How is that cooling the fluid? The way I see it happening now is I'm heating it up then cooling it down through the cooler that is the stock one.

because its still moving the fluid through the fins.. cooling somewhat.. then after it leaves it will hit the big cooler out front and then really get cooled and head back to the trans. Also think about a deep pan.. more fluid capacity is always better.

It is my understanding that once the transmission gets up to temp it runs a little hotter than the engine and so running it through the radiator first starts to cool the fluid down and then out to the external cooler gives it another step to cooling it down some more from the coolant temp.

You want to keep it set up this way. If anything you want to change out the stock external to a larger external if it is still running hotter than you want. Also changing over to the new Dexron VI fluid will help keep it cooler from a conventional automatic transmission fluid which Dexron III/IV is conventional.

I have a factory transmission cooler in addition to the line going thru the radiator, I also have the Dexron VI in mine. Since I put the HD cluster with the trans temp guage in there, I noticed the trans temp never gets over 200.

What you need to do is get an infered thermometer and take the temp of the transmission return line as it is going into the transmission and then take the temp of the supply line to the cooler. This will give you a good indication if your trans temp gage is reading properly.

the cooler the tranny fluid the better. I would not bypass the cooler.

Only to a point. Somewhere in the 140-180 range seems to be optimal for the 4l60e (not sure what the OP's trans likes to run at though).

If you're running at 170-175, I'd just leave it alone, that's pretty good. It should cool off a bit if you bypass the radiator though and just run through the external cooler.
