OK guys I need to know what you guys think im having problems with my starter again on my 1993 5.7 F/S GMC truck I put a brand new one on it last month and last week while do some driving around in this Texas heat and my truck was nice and hot in the middle of the day I will shut it off and it wouldn't start or do nothing.

So what happens is once it cools down it starts with no problems to start with the heat shield is on the starter and I replaced it with a new Ultra starter not rebuilt because starters don't last many years on my truck and in the last two years I have replaced it three times.

On last friday it happened again and it cooled down and when I went to start it the starter made a clicking sound twice then she turn on so what I did in the morning is I took it to my buddies shop and he ran a wire from the solenoid up towards the battery so when it was nice and hot and it messed up again I just tapped the wire on the hot terminal of the battery and she started right up.

Im thinking it's the solenoid so even though it has a lifetime warranty I want to buy a Borg Wagner brand solenoid from Advance Auto Parts what do you guys think? What do you guys think about all the grounds on the truck and the main cable powering the starter from battery?
Thanks! Roland
PS-Im even thinking of placing some header tape on the heat shield to keep more of the heat off solenoid. I don't want to have to depend on getting off my truck and hitting the battery to start it I hate having things jury rigged on it.

If it was mine... I would replace the solenoid with a AC Delco...
Thats what came on it and it lasted many years...

Now that you are using aftermarket stuff, you are having constant trouble with it.
Go back to what was designed, tested and made for it.

Just my opinion...

It does sound like it's getting too hot from your description... but it should work. Not much different on your truck than everybody elses.

Well, the "tapping the battery cable" statement leads me to believe it is a cable issue. I would start there.

Starter problems.

I agree but where should I start? Im thinking of replacing the positive cable it's just $12.00 bucks give me more ideas. Advance has Delco Remy starters I wonder if O'Rielly's will return my money for the new Ultra starter I have on my truck?

Again I hate for me not trusting my truck when im out and about or mostly on a trip which I have one coming up.
Thanks again! Roland :tmc:

Best thing ive ever seen for starter or alternators is to find a place that can rebuild them... Most of the time they are cheaper... And they use quality parts because they will back there rebuilds... they solder there parts by hand.. As where factory crap are soldered buy a computer.. and they cheap out.

Also for 12 bucks... I would replace the cable while your at it... Cables can get corrosion built up inside the cable causing problems.. I fought that for along time on my f250...

I had the same exact problem on a 85 Oldsmobile I used to have. Wouldn't start when it was hot, but I could jump the solenoid and it would start. I replaced the solenoid, but that didn't help one bit. I finally sucked it up and bought a new starter. After that, I had no more problems out of it. A mechanic told me that once it gets hot, the case swells or expands and if the clearance is too tight it will not crank or else need a LOT more current to get it to crank.
