Well it's not your average trolling motor or Johnson Outboard. We are in the middle of doing our 10,000 hour inspections of our Port Main Engine. Pulling heads, Pistons and Con Rod Bearings for inspection. This is a 9,000 HP inline 9 cylinder diesel engine specifically a MAN 52/55A.

We are pulling 8 of our 9 cylinders down for inspection, all heads are going out to be rebuilt and any other items that don't cut the mustard are getting replaced. Had 2 of the 4 pistons that we have pulled fail today. Well they didn't fail but they aren't worth putting back in, so they will go to scrap.

Some of us are mechanics by trade and will probably enjoy the pics, the rest of you can chime in and ask questions if you want.

That's some big ass sheeitt.But I have a question.....Is that YOUR foot.:dunno:

:)

Yep, my foot.:D

Actually the bearing isn't too bad, the plan is to hand polish the edges of the scratch and re install it. I know it looks like you can see brass through the babbit but it's just the red reflection of the deck.

How many heads are there on a inline 9 cylinder diesel engine?

Those components are huge

9 heads on this one Greg, yes the parts are huge. You don't do much without a chain fall of over head hoist.

Looks good for the 10K
Yeah not bad actually considering the hours on the engine. We'll get these 4 cylinders put back together and then wait on these 4 heads to come back from the shop before we tear down the other half of the engine. You can still see a pretty good cross hatch in the cylinder liners and all the rings still have a bunch of life in them. But we are re-ringing the whole thing regardless. So all liners will be re-honed so the new rings seat properly.

Was the 10,000 hour a misprint? Cause that aint many hours considering how messed up those parts are looking.
Get some pictures of the fuel injection system. Does it have a pump or is it Unit Injected?
How much fuel does it burn in an hour and how big are the ships fuel tanks?
