My gauge is manual aftermarket and its a stock oil pump-i just had thought if my oil pressure was running twice what it needed to be-fully warmed up(200 degrees)its pushing 70lbs at 60mph/3000rpm-that it would hurt the bearings/dist gear...im pretty sure the gauge is good to...at idle fully warmed up its 40lbs-before without the lucus add-it was 10lbs less with 20w-50. I just don't wanna screw anything up-im just really getting the thing darn near driveable/dependable. Most sites iv come across say 10lbs per 1000 rpm and if thats true at 60/3000rpm its 70lbs---what should i do? Some of the guys have mentioned to go to a 10w-30 an not to put the lucus add in-so i was going that way.

I think running 20w-50 is not needed in a stock engine build. Now if it sees track time and is made to run in the high rpm range and built for that then the engine builder would know and make the call. I think you would be fine with 10w-30.

I had my 396 rebuilt, balanced and blueprinted and the builder, who builds sprint cup engines said to just use 5w-30 in it. I do have a roller cam so I don't need the extra ZDDP. My oil pressure at idle is 20 and at 60 mph is 40psi. The 10psi per 1,000 rpm is the rule. As long as you have that your are good.

The only oil i can find that has that additive is vr1 and they only carry it in 20w-50. Before when i ran it with it and without that lucus additive the oil pressure was lower about 60psi at 6omph and 3000rpm at 200 degrees. And the part store don't sale that additive alone that vr1 puts in it. Does running to high oil pressure mess with the bearings an dist. ? The engine is a mild build...as far as 40 over a cam an add on but stock everything else. The best i can do in lowering the oil pressure is the 20w-50 vr1 without the lucus additive and run 60psi at 60 mph at 3000rpm. instead of of the 70psi.Any suggestions?

Lucas oil stabalizer does thicken the oil, same thing happend to me, and anyone I know only uses 20w-50 in race applications or jet-boats.

Is the zinc additive only for break in? Seems odd to need a special additive to run a cam all the time...

My builder told me to use zinc additive all the time or cam go flat:dunno:. Well i called a diffrent parts store an they got the zinc additve i can add to my oil-i was thinking castrol 10w-30 with the zinc...Iv got so much oil pressure it leaks a little off the side of intake and seems to blow alittle out vavle cover.

Lucas makes break in lube with high zinc, maybe even amsoil too... http://www.lucasoil.ca/products/product.asp?id=67&cat=HeavyDuty

Running a 30w should drop your oil pressure down substantially, it`ll probly run 50psi at the highest...
My cam is good up to 6200rpm...i need it to be able to go up to there i guess. to low of oil pressure would'nt be good either. 50psi would limit me to 5000rpm. Guess i could do the 10w-30/zinc/lucus add-or 20w-50vr1 with zinc in it and it be about the same...am i missing something?

Try the 10w30 with the zinc stuff and see what the hot pressure is at the RPM you go to, only way to know is to try!

What brand of cam do you have. I would contact the ,manufacture and see if you need the zinc after initial break in.

Your right-starting thinking maybe if i went higher rpm it would get more oil pressure even with the 30w. And id rather be to low and have to go up in psi than to have it explode on me from to much pressure.
