I think you might still have trouble even with the JB Weld because there just isn't enough surface area. Is there any way that you can maybe JB Weld a piece of angle iron or aluminum or really anything that you can attach both to the broken piece and to the main part of the handle? That way it would give more surface area to hold that piece down against the spring load. Just a though. Good luck!
After getting rid of the old epoxy and looking at it I'm gonna have to use something to build it up some or support it. I'll see if I have some extra medal or something around
