They did. That is the frustrating part. They got new rules a couple of years ago, apparently. Stock sizes only, at Costco

:lame:

I've heard that some Discount Tire locations are picky like that. The one I usually go to was 100% ok with me going with a slightly alternate size on the Outback. If they had been stuck on "it has to be the stock size," I wouldn't have been able to put the Geolander A/T's on it.

Damn, I thought Sam's was bad...

Discount is where I do all my business. Bought a new set about 2 months ago. I busted a sidewall on my right rear tire a couple of weeks ago and got it replaced no questions asked.

Any other shops around? Sounds like they're stupid.

Stupid doesn't even begin to cover it. At least not at my local Costco. They have a rule that all lugs must be torqued to what the book calls for, and if it's not on their chart, and you can't show it to them in your owner's manual, they won't touch it. That's all well and good, but does not allow for things like aftermarket rims that may need a different torque. And the only person in the shop allowed to use the (they only have one) torque wrench is the manager. (They don't use torque sticks) That's still not too bad I suppose, it keeps the "mechanics" they have from busting the wrench using it as a breaker bar, but the manager himself has no clue (or training - I asked) on how to use a torque wrench. He just uses it as a regular wrench, and jerks on it until "it feels right". He has no idea how to set it, and doesn't know what the click means (he thought the wrench was getting old and loose on the handle - and that was why it was making that noise)

This is the same idiot I had to physically drag out through the driver's window of my truck after he tried to pull it into a bay with an 8 foot door (truck is 12 foot high) with me and all his mechanics yelling at him to stop. He did stop, looked up and did one of those "opps" faces, then backed up about 6' and tried to angle it into the next bay (14' door). When he realized the mirror wasn't going to clear he then grabbed it with both hands and tried to fold it in - my mirrors don't fold. They're rigid stainless mounted right to the door. He refused then to get the fwonk out of my truck (ordered him out three times - with someone now recording it on their cellphone) and when he refused the third time I grabbed him by his hair and his shirt and yanked him out through the driver's window and put him on the ground.

When the state trooper showed up (several people called) and was shown the video, his only question was "do you want to press charges for unauthorized vehicle use?" When the shop manager complained that I assaulted him the trooper advised him that it would be in his very best interests to shut his mouth and not say one more word, and that it seemed to him that I used reasonable force to prevent further damage to my vehicle by a person possibly under the influence of a controlled substance. When the store manager came out he tried to laugh it off and say that I should have let the shop manager do what he was doing, because their insurance would have covered any damage, the trooper muttered something about needing to get the damn dog down here and check the whole place for drugs.

I don't get tires at Costco anymore.

Kind of understandable. Gotta make the rules for the stupidest common denominator.

Wow! :wtf: That guy really redefines a new level of stupid.

 It wouldn't have been funny at the time, but reading that made me laugh so hard.

Someone should have YouTube'd that and the cop's reaction.

SAMs club is the same way. They wouldn't sell me tires because it was a different size than the sticker on my door jamb. I ended up having to bring them the actual wheels sitting in the bed of my in laws truck. I now just get all my tires from TireRack.com and just have them mounted locally (loose wheels) and then I bolt them on my truck myself. It was easy when I got new tires on my wife's car, I just put her wheels in the back of my Burban. But when I get tires I have to borrow somebody's truck to go get them mounted.
I'm actually pretty lucky that TireRack has a distribution center here locally. So I don't even have to pay shipping. I just order the tires and go pick them up from the warehouse, then bring em to get mounted. I save a good chunk of money doing it that way, because all the local tire shops charge ridiculous prices. Most of them get their tires from TireRack anyways, and just mark up the price substantially.
