In Louisiana, they check all your lights, horn, wipers, and are supposed to drive it a short distance to see if they notice anything abnormal with the brakes. If they do feel or hear a grinding sound they can fail you. You have 30 days to get it repaired, then come back and you can get your inspection sticker at no additional cost. If you wait longer than 30 days, you have to pay and get it inspected all over again. Regardless, it is the vehicle owners responsibility for making the repairs on their own vehicle, regardless of whether the inspector failed them or not.

I am sorry Dave but at this point in your life you can't sugar coat your mistakes.

Keep in mind that these inspections are mainly focused with the appearances as far as lighting and what touches the road. If they can regulate those who have neglected tires or have not replaced signals this may save lives down the road.

In Ohio they used to test the Exhaust by EPA standards. I don't know if they still do that or not...

The other issue at hand is if you could not figure out how to safely stop your vehicle due to vehicle failure then you might either want to take some driving courses or take the cab. You have a cable emergency brake.

I had a ceased caliper on my 99 and lost all my brake fluid because the rubber gasket around the piston broke due to heat. I didn't blame my state inspection and I was able to stop using the emergency brake.
