Though, IMO, you should be required by law to learn how to drive on a manual.

He speaks the truth.

It has always been family law around here. It is amazing how it comes in handy.

My son got a job delivering parts with the company I work for at 16 because he jumped right in the truck with the 5 speed that nobody else could or would drive. These guys were 15 years older than him. He can drive anything, he teaches girls how to drive stick, and even their dads are impressed.

Fathers, teach your sons to drive stick at 16, it's worth it!

Don't wait until 16

Most of us were driving by the time we could see over the steering wheel

Some of us sooner :jester:

It's not heaven . . . it's Iowa!
:withstupid: My first 'vehicle' I drove was a John Deere 4010. (Maybe the 3010, I can't remember). It wasn't until I was much older I learned you didn't have to shift gears on everything manually.

I was 9 when I learned to drive in a stickshift Opel Corsa. But honestly I don't like stickshift, more because of the clutch pedal than anything. I prefer to drive using the feet like in a racing kart because since I had some ankle diseases when I was about 11 it's not so easy to do the punta-tacco while starting uphill drive.

I really hope they don't do any more CVT's than they do now. I don't have any real reasons, but I can't stand those things :fume:

The only Ford car fitted with CVT that I know is the Fusion Hybrid. I actually don't have anything against CVT, and for a compact car it works well. And even for a midsize one, but in a larger vehicle I still don't believe it would handle the torque properly...

I learned on a 4020

I like the idea of an 8 sp. Properly tuned and geared it should be an awesome addition. Most of the people I hear/see complaining about gear hunting fit into one of three categories. Either they are quoting what they "hear" or theorize. They are driving someone else's truck and are paying close attention to every shift, or it's a brand new truck and the tranny hasn't fully learned yet and they start a thread before it has a chance.

All this "learning" deal, maybe that's the issue. The more "idiot-proof" a vehicle must be, it needs to "learn" how an idiot would drive in the real world, not in the industries' test fields...
