Ford to offer 8-speed transmission

7 and 8 speed transmissions are very common in high end luxury cars. It's only a matter of time before they are in everything. Added ratios make the best use of engine torque and power - therefore making better fuel economy while keeping performance at the expected level.

I know Dodge has a bad wrap on transmissions but the only truck I've ever owned or driven that seemed perfect from the factory was my 08 Ram with a 5 speed. It's got that one extra gear that everyone with a 4 speed wants and doesn't spend the time searching like a 6 speed.

I like my 4spd. The gearing works great for me!

I think it would be interesting to have a 2spd rear axle though.

It's interesting that everyone is concentrating on automatics and leaving the manual by the wayside.

The general public doesn't know how to drive a manual, of course they're being phased out

I think the money would be better spent on making a CVT that can get the job done rather than some gimmicky 8-speed transmission.

There are still some issues about the reliability of the CVT belts with hi-torque engines. And for that belt-less toroidal CVT the main issue is the transmission fluid and the purity required to the steel.

It'll be interesting to see how it works out. Maybe the 8 will seem better (less hunting for gears) than the 4.

I really hope they don't do any more CVT's than they do now. I don't have any real reasons, but I can't stand those things

I love it when people ask to use my truck. First thing I say is "can you drive a manual?" and they go "huh?".

I still want to learn to drive a 3-on-the-tree, but I don't know anyone with one.

It has always been family law around here. It is amazing how it comes in handy.

My son got a job delivering parts with the company I work for at 16 because he jumped right in the truck with the 5 speed that nobody else could or would drive. These guys were 15 years older than him. He can drive anything, he teaches girls how to drive stick, and even their dads are impressed.

Fathers, teach your sons to drive stick at 16, it's worth it!
