a Kirby Morgan 57 diving helmet.

Where do you put the weed? :jester:

Best place would be in the little brass tube by the right ear, that's the one-way valve that'll feed down into the regulator... Not sure how you'd light it though. :dunno:

Since it is in the O2 feed, I am going to go out on a limb here and say "VERY CAREFULLY"

Nah, we only dive compressed air, so nothing combustible goes through there. Diving with enriched O2 can be really dangerous, especially the deeper you go. At a certain point the O2 concentration can actually become toxic, resulting in convulsions and unconsciousness. Both bad things to have happen underwater.

Those who dive really deep, we're talking hundreds of feet deep, use a mix where Helium or other inert gases, replace the Nitrogen because at high concentrations (which increase as pressure/depth increase) can cause Nitrogen Narcosis, which makes you feel basically drunk. You can lose feeling in your limbs and the ability to think clearly, also not good to have happen underwater.

These helmets can go that deep and use mixed gas, but usually they require a little modification (gas reclaim usually).

If you want to go real deep, like 2,000' down, you need one of these bad boys, recently adopted and certified for use by the US Navy. They've got 4 of em.

It's basically an underwater space suit. It keeps you pressurized at surface pressures so you don't have to deal with all the nasty stuff that happens from breathing at ultra high pressures.

Edited to add: ^ too many "pressures" in the above sentence!

Do you ever get nervous down there Steve? I would feel claustrophobic I think!

I've heard some people have issues with claustrophobia when putting on the hats, but I suppose they don't stick with this type of diving for very long!

I've never had any problems with it, in fact, I prefer diving the hard hats vs. SCUBA. I don't really get nervous either, excited sometimes at the beginning of a job if it's a place I haven't dove before because you never really know what to expect when you jump in.

I remember the first time I dove in the Seattle area I burned through my tank of air almost twice as fast as usual because there was all this crazy stuff growing off the piles that I never see back East and I was all interested and excited. On that job there were these big honking jelly fish (Lion's Mane Jellyfish) with tentacles that were easily 10' or longer and sometimes they'd get stuck the piles and it definitely spooked me when coming around a pile and ending up face to face with this guy:

Couple guys got stung, but it's not too bad. Just stings for a little while.

Really though it's like anything else, once I'm in work mode and get into a rhythm I don't really think about much else besides the task at hand. I figure it's probably better that way anyways.

The top of the ones we were seeing were probably 1.5 feet, or about 0.5 meters, across.

I've seen the smaller transparent ones too, usually on the East Coast like in New York.
