Are 350’s still easy to get? If so, how would you build it?

Do you know what is out there for me to make it look old and clean? I know I can route wires in hidden locattions but what about the other details to give it an old look?

Building the bottom end of an LS is much more precise than a SBC. Finding a good used 5.3 and sticking it in something is the way to go. Or a 6.0 liter, the LS is just that much better.

The SBC parts are cheap because GM only made about a Billion SBC engines. Dollar for Dollar, GM engines have always been cheaper to build for power, and the LS engine has picked up where the SBC left off and blazed a trail through the hot rod world.:chevy:

I'm sticking with the 350 because 1)I have a Whipple for it, 2)I have a marine intake for it, 3)my exhaust is already done (including headers), and 4)it came stock in the truck. Basically, I'm too far into it to even think about swapping to an LS. (some of you guys may see it otherwise, but that's my view)

I do see where you getting at with the "clean/old" look of the engine bay. Now I know why they put those plastic covers on all the new engines! (again, my opinion)

If I were to start fresh (no matter the truck) with it completely stock and in need of an engine, I'd probably seriously consider the LS.

See in your case it doesn't make sense to go with an LS.

i have seen and read up on the LS lately. And I do like the versatility. If I find one at a good price at the time I am ready to start the biuld then I may pull the trigger. The only hang up I have is I have always planned on using a 350. I have hoped to get this biuld going for years and this the engine I planned on using. Mostly because i do nto know any better.

I have a 350 in the Zombie truck and am planning on an LS swap( have a 5.3 that might just fall in next winter:skull:). The HP I would gain from doing a cam, intake and such on the 350 is already there in the LS....why pay for HP that you can get for free( idealistically).
There are covers for the coil packs that resemble big block valve covers, and with a carb intake it looks pretty clean IMO.

I just helped a fridn of mine with a lot of repairs to his 97 Half ton chevy. That is what re-sparked my interest in geting an old square body. Even though his truck was a 97, it was a lot simpler than my Fords from the same year. He has a 5.7 Vortec. I would not mind at all getting one fo those. That thing runs like a sawing machine and get good milage. What year did the LS's become available? WHat is the difference between a Vortec and an LS?

Old Small blocks are everywhere around louisiana. Compared to a vortec or Ls the old school small blocks are very easy to work on. Be sure to take down the numbers on the block and make sure of the cubic inches your working with. I bought two motors that i was told were 350s and they ended up bein two 305s.

ps. you could always bore any small block to whatever ci you want.

I have built so many. Holy hell.

If you get serious, and do it with a small block, post up some casting numbers.

I have heard the 305's and 350's are similar. To be honest, I think a 305 would be plenty. If and when I go thorugh with this biuld it will be on a budget.

I will do that. I have learned the hard way in the past that I had better check out the numbers before I start buying parts.

What are your goals(hp, mileage, pump gas, etc)? What is your budget?

I love gen I small blocks. Dependable, a ton of parts, and can be done on the cheap. If you are wanting 300-400 hp range you can still do a Carbed gen I for less than a Carbed LS. Especially if you don't have a lot of experience with LS stuff.

If you have the budget. You can make a LS look very nostalgic. They even make distributor kits for them to get rid of the coil packs.

If I were build a small block I would not build anything smaller than a 383. You can build a 383 for the same price as a 350 and have gobs more torque. I like big small blocks. You get the best of both worlds. I currently have a 422 SBC short block sitting on the engine stand waiting for heads.
