Do you have a video camera? Maybe you could record the sound and post it. That might help diagnose it.
That sucks man. Good luck

I just ran the valves to where they stop ticking then a half of a half turn. His is a 3 speed manual. No luck there either. He says hes getting 180lb compression, but the white smoke concerns me. I am wondering if maybe he doesn' have a recessed valve seat from unleaded fuel causeing a valve to make a little racket. But if he has adjust the valves, you'd think he had compesated for that. But still, depending how bad a recessed vavle gets, it can still be making some wierd noise.
it does'nt really sound like it's coming from the oil pan from under neath-it's hard to tell-sounds kinda like it's in back on top-not sure-i can hear roll with the idle-when i give it gas it moves faster...Use a stethoscope and listen to the valve cover in the exhuast port side of the head at each cylinder see if the noise gets any louder at any valve. Also put the stethescope on the oil pan. Try to find where the noise is most prominate.
I'll try a full turn-but i think it will die.-it's got new push rods and rockers...on my monza it only took half of a half.-But i normally would do what you've said a half turn-iv heard a full turn on non hyd lifters?I just ran the valves to where they stop ticking then a half of a half turn. His is a 3 speed manual. Books usually call for a full turn. I usually go a half on hydraulic lifters.
Solid lifter cams you use a feeler guage. You don't do the one full turn past the clatter going away. You can get by with that on hydraulic because hydraulic is foregiving and will compensate. Solid is not foregiving and must be done to spec and tolerance.I'll try a full turn-but i think it will die.-it's got new push rods and rockers...on my monza it only took half of a half.-But i normally would do what you've said a half turn-iv heard a full turn on non hyd lifters?I just ran the valves to where they stop ticking then a half of a half turn. His is a 3 speed manual. What does white smoke usally mean?
I am very doubtful that is a 12 to 1 motor. You'd have to have some healthy domes on those pistons to have 12 to 1. And no, if it were, the only way it would make that noise is if the pistons had such a dome and were not fly cut, they are coliding with a valve which would lead to catostrophic failure, so I don't think so.If it has a high compression ratio and is 12 to 1 would it make this noise? And blow out white smoke out one side?
