If it's the rod-it's probably making the piston go cockeyed and it's probabaly has bent the crank-when i bought the trk it had this same thing at the time i thought it was the chain(not double roll)or the mechanical fuel pump.

Is the truck an auto or stick, I have heard cracked flywheels on the autos sond like a rod also. If its an auto put in gear and see if it goes away or gets louder. It usually does one or the other. Just a thought.

His is a 3 speed manual. No luck there either. He says hes getting 180lb compression, but the white smoke concerns me. I am wondering if maybe he doesn' have a recessed valve seat from unleaded fuel causeing a valve to make a little racket. But if he has adjust the valves, you'd think he had compesated for that. But still, depending how bad a recessed vavle gets, it can still be making some wierd noise.

I just ran the valves to where they stop ticking then a half of a half turn.

Use a stethoscope and listen to the valve cover in the exhuast port side of the head at each cylinder see if the noise gets any louder at any valve. Also put the stethescope on the oil pan. Try to find where the noise is most prominate.
