GMT400s had great brakes. I towed boats all over creation without trailer brakes and never had an issue. Fix what is there back to OEM standards and you'll have better brakes than most others.

If it's just for better brakes, run 3/4 ton LD (6 lug) calipers on the front and swap in a 14 bolt SF 6 lug rear axle which would already have bigger drum brakes then the 10 bolt rear.

If that's not enough there is a disc brake conversion kit for the rear which should be more than plenty if you ever decide to run 35" tires or bigger.

For the rear you could swap axles with a 14 Bolt FF, But I think there is lug adapters you slide over your lugs and it allows you to put an 8 lug on wheel on.
