Any major drawbacks to this engine? I'm looking at an '08 FX4 fully loaded with 12,000 miles.

EDIT: Its at a dealership and its certified used but it has dual exhaust with no DPF. Not sure if it has a tuner but I'm sure it would to erase the codes.

he shouldn't have that problem since it has an aftermarket exhaust :)

if you do get it look up spartan tunes and get the 310HP one

I was just going to start a thread. My buddy has an 08 6.4 dually, he recently got a SCT Livewire chip, and a dpf delete. At first he ran the dpf delete without the regen turned off, but today he got the "offroad" tune which turns off regeneration. The tune he has is +160 HP, and boy can you tell, it also will leave a puff of smoke if you get on it too. Overall it runs much better. Also he went from between 11.3-11.6 MPG to a whopping 15+, the highest he's seen was 15.8, but on the highway I'd guess you could see 17-18. Which beats the hell out of my 12.x
He also deleted the muffler, and at idle by the tailpipe, it really sounds like a dryer vent running, but still sounds good, especially when you hear the turbos:naughty:

From what I've read, that motor and trans. is a pretty solid unit stock or modded.

You got a link to the dealer Scott?

Edit: his does have just about 33k, and the brakes are starting to squeal, even though the dealer turned the front ones right before he bought it a couple months ago

my 09 F550 has the 6.4 and the five speed auto, i have 375XXkms (233XXmiles) and have zero powertrain issues, i only get 8.5mpg with the DPF, but i wieght 15,500lbs daily and up.

only warranty was front shocks, they were to bouncy :D2 .

very happy with the truck, tho a six speed and exhaust brake would be bitchin`! :naughty:

I really can't say a bad thing about them other than they are heavier and slower of which can be fixed with a tune...

You can run a 4wd launch on a stock suspension even when tuned.

The fuel system including lift pump, fuel lines and injectors are capable of 500+ hp... I think that I have even seen up to 700hp.. Tranny is most likely the weekest link but still yet on a stock tune it would be reliable...

I had to upgrade my fuel system to see 500hp :(

That's all I got...

A couple guys I work with have them, and they have had some issues. Most of the problems are tied to the dpf, so if that is gone, that should cure a lot of them. One had issues with warped head gaskets leaking antifreeze into the cylinders, but it was an early production unit. Other than that, they seem pretty solid. I don't like how high first gear is in the 5 speed auto, but they haven't had any tranny issues.

My buddy is having hella problems with his, all caused by the previous owner doing nothing for maintenance though.

Has about 115k miles on it, just got it 2 months ago and hes already replaced the water pump, installed a coolant filter, replaced the radiator and all the hoses plus a ton of other stuff.

Its finally starting to be reliable now that he has replaced the entire cooling system. Other than that its been great, hes done the DPF delete and is running the Spartan 250 tunes. That thing can haul!
