Yeah, the ecoboost had really great mid-high range power...it just was so incredibly smooth and quiet accelerating you could hardly tell.

Thanks for the report Zach.

I'd love to drive them both. Haven't had a chance. No Ecoboost trucks in stock at my Ford buddy's store. They have had a few but they sold them right away.

This dealership here in MN had 85 2011 trucks in stock with a ton of every spec imaginable. Didn't get to drive a 6.2 but they were there as well. It was so busy there on saturday this sales guy handed us a license plate and just unlocked the cars we wanted to drive and let us do what we wanted.

Yeah, I really think they might be better than GM's current line of trucks. And that's hard for me to swallow.

That 5.0 looks real good on that dyno sheet.

I mean the ecoboost is a great example of what DI and boosting can achieve. But that 5.0 is a freaking monster.

As previously stated though I would not mind driving an F150 with any of fords new engines. They always had the weakest engine lineup(IMO) but now it seems to me like the have the best engine selection.

Yeah, I'm thinking it might be easier to void your factory warranty on the ecoboost than the 5.0 with simple mods.

yup, if you plan to mess with anything under the hood then get the 5.0. from what ive read about the warranty on the eco you can breath on it wrong and void the warranty. (its serious business and has an entire seperate manual for seeing if anything was done to the engine) unless you have the cash to fix it if it breaks haha

OK, so just drove both trucks this weekend with a buddy. Drove a 4wd ecoboost with 3.73 gears. It made almost zero engine noise....lol my dad would love this truck. Just not for me though it had no character. Power was lacking low in the RPM range we turned traction control off and stood on it and it definitely needed to build some boost before the rear end would break loose a bit.
The 5.0 4wd with 3.55 was waaaay different. Really enjoyed that truck....I mean I would totally get one if I were in the market for one. It had such an amazing rumble and it toasted the rear tires without stalling it up at all. It only really fell on it's face on the highway which I think is a tuning issue. Definitely could feel the torque management holding it back.
The mileage on both trucks was outstanding. These trucks had like 12 miles on them and the instant economy numbers while we were driving were crazy good. Good times were had that's for sure.

i think it really is a matter of personal taste after you drive them both really. im itching to test drive them over summer but ive been holding back for the same reasons as mark had

Thanks for that info. I am intrigued by the ecoboost but I think you hit the nail on the head.

I knew the "5.Oh mah gawd" was going to be sweet since they put it in the mustang and started beating 6.2 'maros.

last semester. when ford came to the texas motorspeedway I went to see their line up. i got to drive a truck with every engine. the eco and 6.2 are verrryyy competitive, id take one of each, the eco too my suprise was quick, even for a screw w/ 4wd. towing...it wasnt a problem for it and i still squeeled the tires with a 3k trailer. for any truck id take the eco, unless it was a raptor or harley.

ford has really set the bar high, im excited to see what the got next and come out with in a couple years.

I'm thinking a small turbo V8 in the 4 liter size would be perfect down the road. Definitely cool things on the way.

GM already could be offering some versions of its trucks and vans with "downsized" engines but its (stereo)typical customers are not so favorable to changes like Ford guys seem to be. Also, it's still cheaper to make a pushrod 6.2 than a DOHC 5.0, so it's not so hard to understand why GM still relies on the basic concepts of the '55 small-block...

http://engineeringworkarounds.blogspot.com/2011/01/is-gm-ready-to-play-downsizing-game.html

But I would prefer to never drive a Ford if I could get a Chevy.

They could do a turbo/direct injection pushrod motor I don't care as long as it's competitive.
