Dave your teacher needs a different profession. Sorry, this guy is incompetent working on vehicles. I wouldn't want him near mine.

The water pump can push out the coolant thru the weep hole. That coolant can flow along the oilpan and drip on the exhaust that crosses over from the driver side. That is probably what your smelling.

Are you sure there is white smoke out the exhaust and not just water vapor being burnt off?

Repairs such as this are worth doing yourself. I absolutely dread taking anything to any shops. Even the best ones, always do something that I fucking hate. I take many of our fleet vehicles in to dealerships (our company policy) and have had several years of warranty on my newer Chevys. They suck. I have stories from now 'till Tuesday. The quality of workmanship is dreadfully lacking.

If a water pump went out on my Silvy, I would most certainly repair it myself, and it is covered by warranty. I would guess that I am busier than you are with my job, but I would make the time for this repair.

You have the tools, you have the shop, you claim to have the skill/training...you should give this one a shot, Dave. Satisfaction for this stuff is worth a ton, in my experience.

If you can repair a mower, you can replace this water pump. You'll probably spend more time dropping off and picking the truck up than the water pump R&R would take

I have never replaced a water pump before in my life. But I replaced mine when it began leaking from the weep hole. After much searching, I found a YouTube video that outlined the entire process and it was very simple after watching that video. Actually, come to think of it, I believe someone on here posted the YouTube video asking about replacing the water pump on my truck.
Several months later, the AC compressor went bad. I was also able to replace that by myself even though I had never replaced one before. I did have to get someone to vacuum and recharge the system for me though, since it was far cheaper to pay him than to buy the gauges and/or rent a vacuum pump.

Changing the water pump on a SBC is one of the easiest ones to do.
