On your 96, I don't think you have to worry about TM much.
As far as octane goes, you don't HAVE to run the octane it is rated for, but I would not recommend getting on it hard if you have say a 93 octane tune and try to run 87. The knock sensor will retard the timing some, but it will not take out all of the ping. I personally just run 93. If I fill my tank up completely it's only like $6 buck difference, not worth the potential damage.
Shift firmness is a personal preference. My Vmax will chirp the tires mid throttle from 1-2 shifts. That is something you will have to decide.
BUT, all of this being said. Tell Justin how you drive, if you tow, and what octane you want and sit back and enjoy the ride.

learn something new every day. Is there a computer controlled phaser on the distributor that retards or advances timing? I always just assumed to reduce likelihood of pinging it could cut fuel.
