I want to put rubberized( or whatever) undercoating on the GMC, anyone done it by hand?

reason is i know you can buy the stuff in the aerosol can, but i want to do a real good job. IE: NOT painting over fuel/brake lines, wiring etc. i just want to get the frame coated, i know it will be tedious, but i want to do it.

any recommendations to products that i can do that with? i`m not looking for a thick coating just minimal, to make it look nice for selling the truck.

any recomendations on surface prep? i was just going to pressure wash it and dry it with a blow gun... there is light surface rust obviously, i could probly use an air buffer and wire wheel it...:dunno:

i`ve done that before but i dunno if the wire leaves a film or what but nothing sticks to the metal after i wire wheel it... :dunno:

The wire wheel makes the metal too slick for the paint to stick. Seriously. I've never tried any of the paint on stuff, aerosol I have used some before but never brush on. :dunno:

Ive used the aerosol on frames and axle housings after wire wheeling. But I didnt grind it down to a shiny surface. If it gets to a shiny surface take sandpaper to it to rough it up. Its also really easy to get overspray from. I use it on the clutch pedal in my Peterbilt as the pedals steel was worn smooth.

On the F150online site a guy did his frame on the roll on lining stuff, seemed to have done well. Scratch the frame up in 600 grit and painted it on with a roller. Not sure what he used.. But whatever the frame coating in a can ( non aerosol ) is.

If used a few undercoatings in a can can't say as I would rave about them, but they were all right.

Last time ( a few months ago) I used Rustoleum's Truckbed coating. (It was in one of my fender wells.) A little runny(might not have shook it long enough and/or was to close) seemed to match the factory shit pretty close.

I DEFINETLY wouldn't recommend it to be used as "bed liner",but I'm fairly pleased with my application of it.:D

Sorry I won't be doing any more frame stuff with it for several more months to give a better review for you.

If it matters I'll snap a pic of it for you.

I also used denatured alchol after sanding and using an air tip. Then made sure I wiped down to remove any remaining residue.

To prevent overspray I would recomend using Aluminum Foil on areas where newspaper and masking are ineffictive. It forms better and doesn't blow off when the f'n wind waits 'til you're ready to spray something.:fume:

Or maybe that's just MY luck.:dunno:

Just separate the frame and chasis, take the frame to the powder shop and get it done!
