Still no one answered , How in the hell does a Prius get to 90MPH?

:jester:

Funny clip from story, Sikes was driving east on Interstate 8 when he tried to pass a slower car.

Damn how slow was the slower car going to be passed by a Prius with an old man behind the wheel?!?!? The reporter must have meant he was passing a PARKED car!

I have no doubt that Prius could do 90 off the gas motor. My Yota rolla 1.8 4cyl 5 speed, had no problems cruising 110mph and still pulling until the puter gubner shut it down. It could do 110mph up a big grade and not even strain. It was my mpg car for long trips like OKC to Laughlin many times. I now wish I didn't get rid of it. I miss the 40mpg and plenty of power. Keep in mind I said 5speed. You get one with an auto, its a sled.

Well the people around here that drive them damn sure don't act like they can do 90mph. I use to be behind one damn near every day on the way to work and I thought I was gonna have to push that poor lady up the ramp onto the interstate. She would fart around and creep onto the highway where the speed limit is 70 doing 45mph. I don't know how many times I watched that idiot almost get creamed by semi's!

I'm not doubting Toyota's. Hell my mom had a Toyota pickup she bought new back in 1987 that had a 22R in it that would freaking scream! There wasn't a gear that truck wouldn't catch a wheel in. I'm old enough to remember the 1st MR2's sporting 4 cylinders, not to mention the Supras. I don't think the Prius is a car that would be just randomly passing folks on the highway. EVERYTIME I've seen a Prius on the highway/interstate their always blocking the damn fast lane up and when you pass them the owners look at you like you're crazy for wanting to at least do the speed limit!

That said, I could be wrong. Maybe the Prius is capable of doing speeds of 90mph. The area I live in the speed limit is 70 mph on the interstates pretty much the entire way until you near the metro Atlanta area. If those suckers are capable of 90mph I would think I'd seen one at least running over 80mph...:dunno:

I think it would take all 30 miles for a damn prius to get to 90! i have never seen one doin 80. our Istate limit is 75, and during the warmer months i drive 200 miles a day, i have yet to see a prius doin 75. that said, i dont really know.

I do know, no matter what vehicle Im in if the pedal gets stuck you can be damn sure il get it slowed down! I agree with some of the others, youd have to be a fuggin moron to not figure it out quickly, and your life depends on it.

I have a feeling those Priuss can run, but keep in mind, the type of people driving them. If they bought a hybrid, they are probably some damn conservative yuppie, and trying to squeeze every mile out of a fuel tank of gas, and probably why they are driving slow. My Yota Rolla had no problem getting to 110, and I am sure it would get there way under 1/2 mile. Of course knowing how to drive a manual trans made a differance, and If I were gettiing on it to pick up speed, I was shifting at 6200-6500rpm, forget now for sure, but it had to be wound up tight seeing how as it did not kick into a power band until 3000rpm and one reason the automatics are sleds cuz they shift at much less rpm. I am not getting Yota side here, just saying I had to trade in my full size truck and get the Yota Rolla for fuel economy, and the money I saved in fuel was making the payment, so it was actually a free car and the only reason I considered the idea. After I got ti and was driving it hard, I realized, damn, this thing does have some balls. I was very impressed. I should have never gotten rid ot if, and probably going to get another one, 2003-2008 wiht the 1.8 VVTi engine. (Variable Valve Timing) No joke, stock right off the showroom floor that thing would beat full size V8 Ford trucks from light to light, with me driving it. Thats not saying alot thought. I am reffering to the older Fords, late 90's early 2000's and probably were 4.6's, but a full size V6 Auto in any brand truck, wasn't gonna beat it. I never raced it, I am reffering to horseing around with the high shcool punk kids around here, that were making fun of me getting a Yota Rolla cuz really I am not the type to own one but had to, and so when the fun poking started, I bit back, and said, you might bite your tongue, the little rice burner hunk of shit will not only pass up the gas pump, it will spank your trucks ass and they laugh. Then out in town, see them sitting at a light, and they started their shit, revving the motor etc, and I sit there calmly to catch them off guard when the light changed, nailed the pedal and dumped the clutch, scratched second and by 3rd gear, they were dusted. Next time I seen them, it was, Dayum, that fucking rice does run. TOADJA it did dumb ****, did you think I was kidding???

We're gonna have to agree to disagree on that.

I've read too many reports and test stating they're slow. Not to mention only the 09's and current models have the 1.8 litre motor. All previous models had the 1.5 which made a whopping 76hp on it's own. Together with the electric motor it produced 110. The current models have 22hp more. I understand the point you're making with the Corolla comparison, but the Corolla produces 132hp and a lot more torque. The Prius simply isn't built to be fast, but to simply keep up with the traffic. I think the Prius runs 0-60 in 12 seconds, for the record.

Outrunning a fullsize pickup isn't a hard task in a car. 99% of the pickups sold in America are built to haul and pull. Not to run break neck speeds in a 1/4 mile. Here's an example, hook that Corolla up to even a V6 fullsize pickup and see which one wins a tug of war. :D

I think the other stats may have been a tick off, so I fixed em.

Man, don't remind us about how slow the cars from the 80's were! How bad was a decade that brought us the K car?!?!?
