I am finally ditching my point style distributor on my 72 318. While I am at it I want to install a GM HEI system as well. I know there are a lot of write ups on this subject matter. But I have also seen conflicting information. I just need some clarification on the exact parts I need. I will be getting these parts from a salvage yard. I know, I know, I should never run used electrical parts from a junk yard. Just trust me on this, for right now it is fine.

Distributor – need to know specifically what to look for in a salvage yard. I am pretty sure if it is stuck in a late 70s to late 80s 318 or 360 I am good. But, I just want to make sure. Also, what, if anything, should I grab with it?

HEI – I have seen different coils used in this conversion. What exactly should I look for in the salvage yard? I plan to grab more than one in case I get a bad one. What year vehicles should I look for and does the engine size matter? Also, is there anything else I should know considering I am getting used parts?

I realize that budget is probably making this choice for you, but I also know you'd be much happier in the long run with either an Accel, Mallory or MSD setup in there, and those are the only ignition upgrades I can really recommend for this project. Yes, you can make a GM HEI work, and yes, you can do it with junkyard parts, but reliability is going to seriously suffer, and few things suck worse than standing on the side of the road, in a freezing rain, in the dark, flashlight clenched in your teeth, trying to figure out which crappy junkyard part bit the dust or which tape wrapped twisted wire splice is causing the problem. Seriously.

I agree. For right now I am just getting the truck together. I will have a period of time where I fine tune my upgrades. When I do the frame off, I will upgrade everything.

Then I'd suggest leaving the ignition stock for now, and upgrading it when that time comes.

Stock, really?

Yes, really. Trying to cobble together a GM HEI system for it out of junkyard parts has too much potential to turn into a royal PITA for you. A system like that is fine for guys that like to tinker with stuff, but not so fine on a vehicle that you need to be reliable and as a daily driver.

I see where you are going. The problem is the ignition on this truck has left us on the side of the road more than once already. at the very least I have got to get rid of the points.

Okay then, make that your big purchase for this project and stick a good aftermarket electronic ignition in there. You'll improve your reliability, improve your mileage, and improve your performance, all in one shot.
