Ok so on 8-7-11 I changed the oil in our Xterra from Mobil 1 5w30 EP to the Amsoil 0w30, that was 12,450 miles ago. Being at the half way point i will take a sample of the oil and change the filter to another amsoil and top off with new oil. I plan on sampling again at 20k and again at 25k to get a baseline on how long the oil will last and then hopefully do the 25k drain from now on. I will be posting the results. Wish me luck.

Good luck, you should see good results. But do let us know how it turns out.

I most certainly will. Kind of the point of this thread. I’m vary excited to see the results. Then maybe all of the oil BS I have blabbering about at work the last few months will have some weight.

So since September you have put more miles on your vehicle than I do all year.

Well its actually august sorry about the typo.

Yes my wife puts a lot of miles on that thing. 45 min drive one way twice a day M-F. Hell the first 3,000 miles was put on in a few days shy of a month.

8/11/2011 105165 miles
9/07/2011 108032 miles

I hope your sample results fair better than your last one. If you have that same silicon level again you should start looking for the source.

Its funny you should mention that. Since the last sample was taken i have replaced the KN air filter with a regular Wix one. I also changed the pcv, spark plugs, and did a read diff service. Terry Dyson, the guy that dose the $100 oil samples, recommended i loose the KN since the can contribute to extremely high silicon.
