Would automotive swamp-coolers have a good marketing perspective back there?

It's not exactly intended to be used into private cars, it's more targeted to commercial vehicles. And it's not so much less effective in mid to low humidity places. And it can also work combined with the A/C, increasing its efficiency while keeping the energy consumption lower. Also, for some folks, breathing discomfort in dry places is not so unusual.

I use a swamp cooler in the shop at work and half the time I run the fan only because it makes it too damn humid. I couldnt imagine using that shit in a car.

Not every swamp-cooler works the same way, there are some which spray a water mist directly in the room. These automotive ones don't.

My grandpa and uncles have them in the old Hay Swathers and there were times that it down right sucked but it was better than nothing.

Recently I've seen even an Isuzu NPR and an OBS F-550 with roof-mounted swamp coolers. Until mid to late 90s, automotive air-conditioners were deemed "too expensive" and "unreliable" back here, and retrofitting one into a vehicle which didn't have a factory-fitted one is still harder than adapting a swamp cooler.

I've also seen a Lada Niva with a swamp cooler recently.

The limited space available to assemble a real air-conditioner (altough possible it's an inglorious task) is another factor that pushes for the swamp cooler...

Back in the 40s and 50s they were some what common on car here in the US.

Those window-mounted ones are still popular among ancient car collectors, most notably Volkswagen enthusiasts.

So how exactly do they work?

basically like sweating. Water is run over a sponge like fiber thingy and air blows through it, thus cooling the air, and adding humidity. Just like how you sweat and the wind cools the sweat to cool you off.

That is what I thought. I can see them being unpleasant in a humid environment.
