Depends on what you're lifting, and what you plan to do to it once you have it on the stands. Anywhere on the frame is usually good, cross members are sometimes good, and so are lower control arms.

One trick I learned a long time ago, and which has saved me from injury at least once, is that when lifting a vehicle to do anything that involves removing a wheel, place the wheel under the frame after you get it off. If the vehicle falls off the stand or the jack the wheel will keep it off the ground and help prevent you from being crushed.

Or, if you need heavier, here's a 6 ton pair for $29.99 (24" lift height)

Something to keep in mind, that a lot of folks aren't aware of, is that jack stands are always rated in pairs. So, if the rating is 3 ton then that means 1-1/2 ton each.

Think about that the next time you see those cheepie 1 or 1-1/2 ton sets at the discount auto parts stores.

Ha, never knew that. Normally when I order something I order something that can hold as heavy as possible. You never know what I may work on some times.
