here is 15% on my 98. it matched best to the factory tint. good even go a few percent darker.

A good rule of thumb if you want to match is to generally go a bit lower (5% or so) on the front sides than on the factory rear sides. The windshield lets in much more light than the rear, making the front sides appear lighter than the rear sides even if the % matches up.

As an example, our Ford rear side tint is 18% from factory. 15% on the front sides matches up perfectly in almost all lighting conditions.

I will probably got 15% on the front if the rears are 20% but should I only get 20% on the rear window?

Gonna revive an old thread.

I'm planning on tinting my windows myself with film from ebay. my rear ext. cab windows are already tinted and I want the front side and rear window to match. If I go with 20% will the front look darker than the back from the outside? Should I just go 20% on the rear window and 35% on the front two to be safe?

Applying window film takes a LOT patience. They kept trying to teach me how to tint windows at the alarm shop I used to work at. I hated it. I can give you a few tips though, make sure the window is VERY wet when applying the film, too much is better than not enough. Also work very slow to get all the bubbles out. dont rush or you will crease the film. And a vehicle such as a truck is the perfect vehicle to learn on since all the windows are flat. Curved windows are a PITA and you have to use a heat gun to shrink/form the film to the shape of the glass. Some rear windows are so curved that the film has to be applied in strips. A mid 90's 4door Cutlass Supreme is a tinter nightmare. That rear window is a severe PITA!!!

Haha, I will be sure to take my time when doing this, don't want to mess it up but if I do it's not a big deal. $30 to do it myself is better than getting a shop to do it for $250.

If I tint 20% over my factory tinted glass, how dark will I have to get the rear window to match? Or will it even make a difference?

FINALLY getting this done Saturday. Was gonna do it myself but I'd rather get it done right than do it myself and mess up. Shop wanted $250 for 3 windows but I found a private guy to do it for $150 and he said he will stand behind his work so I thought I'd go with him. Going 15% on the back window and either 15 or 35% on the fronts, most likely 15% though. Will post pics!
