Why Do Family Cars Need 300 Horsepower?

Many soccer-moms get a Tahoe but never tow not even an empty supermarket cart, why would they need anything bigger than the Vortec 4300?

Maybe I don't NEED a Cadillac with 330HP V8.....
Maybe I don't NEED a 2700 square foot house when there is only me and Darling Wife...
Maybe I don't NEED Central heat and central ac...
Maybe I don't NEED a huge fridge with built in icemaker and cold water dispenser...
Maybe I don't NEED a 60 inch Plasma TV...
Maybe i don't NEED a 3500 watt surround sound system...

But I have worked hard all my life and I can now afford it...

Tell me why any fWONking body has any fWONking right to try to fWONking tell me what I can buy with my own fWONking money...

I can't believe the audacity you old people have. You all have this crazy idea or feeling, or whatever the hell it is you get at that age, of entitlement to your own money...

This is a good question. A generation ago vehicles were cruising around with 150-160 HP if they were lucky and everybody got where they wanted to go at or beyond the posted speed limit with ease.

I find the eternal quest for more and faster to be a little bit on the stupid side in these days of 3 buck and above gasoline. If manufacturers concentrated on fuel economy instead of making every new model "Bigger, Faster, More Powerful" we'd probably be driving 200 HP very fuel efficient vehicles by now.

Of course I realize a small segment of buyers are the monobrow "Mo is always better" crowd... but most of us aren't 16 anymore and live in a real world. Horsepower is nice, but in true American consumer fashion, it has become an all out idiot race just to sell cars.

We are losing in the process.

Just to throw a wrench in this thread- MOST "grocery getter" cars (camcordima) being sold are the slower 4 cyclinder models which have less than 200hp. Less than 1 in 10 of these cars sold are actually the high powered V6 options.
My wife's new 2013 altima 3.5 will supposedly run the 1/4 in 13.9@104 according t TTAC.
Fun car and still gets 27mpg easy.
