I've thought of swapping out the little gas 4 in the '69 to the Mercedes 616.912 for better HP, torque, and MPG. But I can't find one that doesn't need a ton of work for a ton of money.

Went from a 318 gas motor in my work truck to a 5.9l Cummings, totaled the cummings and bought a ford w/5.4 gas motor. Like the ford better than the diesel. There is less to go wrong with the diesel, but there is more maintenance. Additives, oil, correct fuel, etc. just a big pain to me. and the fuel is more expensive.
