I went from a Ford 5.4 Triton to a Dodge Ram V-10 in 1998. Then went to a 5.9 Cummins 24 valve, also in 1998. Of those three trucks the 5.9 Cummins was the best.
Then in 2002 I went to another 24 valve Cummins 5.9, and that truck was a dog. It got horrible fuel mileage, and did not make power like it should have. Numerous trips to the dealer failed to find a fixable problem, so I sold the truck in just one year and went to a Duramax diesel. I have since owned three Duramax diesels, a 2003, 2005, and 2007, with all of them having been great trucks.
In 2009 I changed back to gas with a Ram 1500 with a 5.7 Hemi. It was nice to go back to gasoline again, and I really like the much faster engine response, with no waiting for turbo lag. I enjoy driving the Hemi Dodge more than any truck I have owned, and I'm more than happy with the way it tows as well.
But after the first of the year I'm going to have to purchase another heavy duty truck to tow more weight than my half ton Dodge will tow. I'm going to have to go back to diesel again because none of the manufacturers make a gas engine truck that is rated to tow 17,000 lbs. I would rather stay with gas because I prefer driving a gas engine truck, but I dont have that option. I've decided to go back to a Cummins this time, and will be ordering a crew cab Ram 3500 with the 6.7 Cummins.
