Plates stay with the person they are registered to.

Plates are registered to the person here. I typically transfer to the new vehicle, had the same plate on 5 vehicles now. Ones I'm not using go on the wall in the garage.

We keep them and can transfer them to another vehicle that we own. Another person cannot use our plates even if it is for the same car.

No refunds here. If you don't use them for the year - tough.

Both of these.....

In NM, the plate is registered to the owner and can be transferred to another vehicle at trade-in. You can also request a new plate instead of using the old one at the time a vehicle is purchased.

If you sell privately, you hold your plate. The bill of sale serves as a temporary plate for the new owner for up to 30 days.

It doesn't matter if you just payed your registration 2 days ago, then trade vehicles, there is no refund, and your registration cannot be transferred to the new vehicle, even if you keep the same plate. I have a stack of probably 15 plates from vehicles I have traded and have gotten different plates for. You can turn them into DMV for destruction or recycling, but I never have.

I just got Handicapped plates for the Cadillac in March.
I had just renewed the registration in December...
No refund on the plates that I no longer use... :crybaby:

In Texas, the plates stay with the car and get transferred over to the next buyer. You can't take them off and use them on another vehicle (with the exception of personalized or specialty plates). They stay registered to the vehicle.

What happens to them where you are?

Same same.

In Nevada the plates go back to the DMV unless you want them for your next vehicle (little or no credit is given so you'll pay full price to reuse them). Custom plates don't have to be returned.
