My last work truck was an 8.1...I wasn't that impressed, honestly. It pulled ok, but was slow and drank gas like it was going out of style.

They couldn't breath stock. I would venture they were the most restricted engine GM ever put in a truck in the way of exhaust an intake.

I had a couple of tunes in mine. Fast? Well, it was a 2500 crew cab, so the only races that were won were while pulling

With my camper on, I scaled 12K, and could pull our boat at speed up our steepest grades. I needed to stop for gas on the way down, but it was the most impressive gas burner I have ever driven. The Allison just made it all the better.

I shit you not, with 4.10s I could get a bad as 3 mpg when pulling :jester:

Loved that thing.

Mine had an enclosed service body (like my current F350), and I averaged about 8 mpg. Throw an enclosed snowmobile trailer on it with 2 sleds, and it got around 6 mpg. Add a headwind and it got 4-5...I often filled up 3 times a day.

For comparison, my v-10 Ford gets about 12 mpg without the trailer and about 9 mpg with it. I have gotten as low as 7 with a headwind. The v-10 has a better top end, but lacks quite a bit of torque on the low end compared to the 8.1.

This will crush.

You could try putting an overdrive unit on the back. I'm not sure of the hp/tq limits of them.
