Re: Valve cover leak and oil pressure switch problem

I would imagine if you could probe the white wire with a volt meter set to DC volts. Black lead to ground with red lead probing the white wire, you should see some voltage change as pressure increases or decreases.

Probably won't see more than 5 volts max though. If you don't see any voltage at all, then the sensor is shot.

You just said it's under warranty. Just go swap the damn thing out. :p

I will most likely do just that. I just wanted to figure out if I had some kind of a wiring issue since this is going to be the third sensor in almost 3 years since we've owned it.

How are your grounds? Both wire, engine and from or near the battery and ECU or fuse box etc. Maybe one is broken or weak, small voltage spikes or intermittent ground could cause havoc with small transducers etc. Does the car have an aftermarket sound system? amps? If so is the system grounded and not having any ground loop issues?

Since posting this I did some more reading in the FSM. Apparently is has an section on diagnosing the guage setup as well as the sensors. WIN!

So I guess I'll replace the sensor and try some of that.

Well I picked up the new sensor today and installed it. All is fine now but I wonder if this one will only last two years like the other one.

That is a rather odd failure rate.

I have seen this a lot with some 3 wire sensors (signal, hot, ground), and typically there is a high resistance issue on the ground or positive. The signal back to the gauge is usually unaffected, so you can't detect it during normal operation, but the ignition cycles take the toll on them at startup.

He should make sure the harness integrity is perfect, look for any connector issues, or look for that oil leak insulating the pins in the connection at the sensor.
