You'll probably get 13MPG with a small trailer like that, running on coal... A 6.0 or 6.2 half ton will get about the same as your current truck. My old 5.3 (dyno'd with more torque than a stock 6.2) got 7.5 MPG pulling my TT.

It's not heaven . . . it's Iowa!
How often do you pull the TT and how far?

The gears would be cheap and easy :dunno:
20-25 times a year, longest distance was last weekend around 500 miles

This amount of time towing and distance tells me one thing, you really enjoy camping.

No seriously, it is great that you get out and spend the time with the family. It is something they all will remember and will cherish.

That being said, if you continue to tow this often to me upgrading to a 3/4 ton would be the way to go. Now gas vs diesel is the next decision. I'm sure those on here can tell you what to expect with both. To me a coal burner would be the better option and I'm sure you could find a good used one.

That's a lot of pulling, and I agree with Nick here. Good, used diesel 3/4 ton

What do you guys think about the daily driving aspect he mentioned with the diesel? Short trips are hell on DPF diesels because the system never gets properly heated up...is it an issue with a non-DPF engine?

Not an issue without the DPF. Even with it, the LML isn't all that bad.

My dually was getting about 17 MPG on the highway, before deleting. Afterwards, I'm getting 20+

That's definitely a concern for me and something I need to closely consider. It was mentioned that 06/07 doesn't have the DPF, but 07.5-10 do have the DPF to delete, what about 11-13 (that's the LML, right?)

07.5 and up will have the DPF. Unless you find one used that the previous owner has deleted, which is highly likely. One thing to look into is there emission testing on diesel trucks in your area?

Not being in a hurry, I think you could find a good used vehicle at a good price. They have grown in popularity. Some around here buy one keep it for a year and upgrade to a newer model. Crazy as it seems but I see it around here. Kind of like "keeping up with the Jones" it seems. No sooner the 2014's came out and there was a bunch of them around. It is wild to see a Black lifted 3/4 ton Dmax 4x4 Denali all covered in mud and trashed inside from it being used on the farm. Not a highway queen like most Denali's.

Doesn't look like it: "No statewide emissions inspections required."

I've already been looking, the 3/4 ton trucks sure do hold their value though!
