My shop makes lots and lots of money off of 4l60 transmissions that are in half ton trucks that never haul anything more than the houshold garbage :)

I fully understand that. I have had a couple rebuilt my self. I'm by no means sayings its the strongest transmission out there. I'm not that naive. But, I am a firm believer that part of the reason you see so many 700r4/4L60s in need of repair is the fact there is soooooo many out there.

Serious question. Can anyone name a transmission that has been in use longer and is used in more vehicles than the 700r4/4l60/65/70 transmission?

Well I do not know the numbers, but the Ford AOD was in use from 1980-1993 that I know of. The AODE started in 1992ish which is basically an AOD with solonoids controlled by the PCM. Then I think it was 1993-1994 Ford came out with the 4r70 which is a AODE with different gear ratio and stronger internals. Alot of the parts are interchangable with the AOD transmisison so I just consider it an evolution of the AOD. We run an AOD in our 88 Mustang with 4r70 gear set and output shaft. I dont know if this answers your question or not but it is a long used transmission. The AOD, AODE 4r70 Came in Ford cars and Trucks. Again I do not know the numbers so I dont know if its more than the 700r4/4l** transmissions.

I was not trying to say you were naive BTW, just wanted to point out the trans could be made better. I am sure alot of parts of cars and trucks could be made better.. lol

I'll be upgrading to a 6 speed, when finances allow... Only a few more parts to get, lol.

The cooler is so I can make my trip in June, and make it home...

I'm about 1000 lbs over the rating of the 4L60E

Oh I know you were not. Truly just friendly exchange.

I am truly interested. I just think the 4l60 is a better transmission than its given credit for. Used for its intended use, I think it's pretty good. I just feel that there is a ton of them out there and that is part of the reason so many are getting rebuilt. If trans temps are monitored they can hold up very well. I think drivers destroy the transmission more than true failure due to a weak transmission.

Now, that being said. I would not pick one for a high horsepower or drag racing scenario. There are much better choices. No matter who builds it.

I know towing the racecar (3200 lbs and 1900lb trailer) I see 150-160 average tranny temps. In traffic I see 180s but it does not stay there long. On a cold day once I lock in the convertor I have watched it run about 135 for long periods.

Mine is between 180 and 220...
But my trailer is 7400lbs dry... Add the quad, 30 gallons of gas, and that's another 1000 -, 1200lbs.

Sounds like you need a smaller trailer.. lol
I could have got an actual car trailer, but got an equipment trailer so its more heavy duty.
Making the thread take a right turn.. Sorry.

The tow rating of the newer 5.3s with the 6 speed is much higher... The 6 speed I'm collecting parts for is good for a whole hell of a lot more
