Well I do not know the numbers, but the Ford AOD was in use from 1980-1993 that I know of. The AODE started in 1992ish which is basically an AOD with solonoids controlled by the PCM. Then I think it was 1993-1994 Ford came out with the 4r70 which is a AODE with different gear ratio and stronger internals. Alot of the parts are interchangable with the AOD transmisison so I just consider it an evolution of the AOD. We run an AOD in our 88 Mustang with 4r70 gear set and output shaft. I dont know if this answers your question or not but it is a long used transmission. The AOD, AODE 4r70 Came in Ford cars and Trucks. Again I do not know the numbers so I dont know if its more than the 700r4/4l** transmissions.
I was not trying to say you were naive BTW, just wanted to point out the trans could be made better. I am sure alot of parts of cars and trucks could be made better.. lol

I know towing the racecar (3200 lbs and 1900lb trailer) I see 150-160 average tranny temps. In traffic I see 180s but it does not stay there long. On a cold day once I lock in the convertor I have watched it run about 135 for long periods.
Sounds like you need a smaller trailer.. lol
I could have got an actual car trailer, but got an equipment trailer so its more heavy duty.
Making the thread take a right turn.. Sorry.
