I have noticed a small leak coming from my transfer case lately. I cannot pinpoint a source, the whole case has a thin coat of oil on it. I pulled a trailer a few hundred miles south, then back today, and noticed oil spots on the front of the trailer at our last stop. I didn't have a way to check the fluid there (3/8 hex and I didn't have one with me). It wasn't making noise or anything, so I drove it on home. I was thinking I should drive it this way until it quits leaking on it's own, but wanted another opinion. Maybe I should replace the fan clutch and see if that fixes it.

Seriously though, what it's the best way to find/diagnose the leak?

Clean it then let it leak again.

Check level at the higher plug on the t case.

Thanks guys. I didn't have time to mess with it today, but I'll spray it down with degreaser and clean it up to see if I can find something obvious. I hadn't thought about the vent. Does anyone know what kind of seal is in the tailshaft? I had a u-joint go bad a while back, and the drive shaft vibrated at highway speeds before I replaced it. Could it have wobbled out the rear seal?

Given The age of the truck and the weather in your area you could have cracked a seal that was drying out and hence now you have a leak buddy.
