Tow/Recovery/Snatch Straps

The bad thing about chains is if they snap, they can be deadly depending on where they end up swinging. :dunno:

It ain't no picnic when a strap or rope breaks either.

I saw a mooring hawser snap once when I was in the Navy. It went through a line of steel stanchions like a lawnmower blade.

I had a tie off ring break once when recovering someone. Went thru the back glass and landed right in the carseat for the baby. Just one other reason I don't allow them to ride in the truck offroad.

It's not heaven . . . it's Iowa!
I knew a kid who had a strap hooked to the ball hitch of a vehicle he was pulling out. The ball snapped off, shot through the back window, ricocheted off the windshield and busted out a bunch of his teeth! :willy:

I'm always paranoid of tow straps now. :paranoid:

I don't really know the guy real well, but I would imagine he was tugging on it. Especially if you get to tugging on one of those elasticity straps, you can get some CRAZY forces going . . . :willy:

I'd buy the heaviest rated strap you can afford. Overkill is a good thing when it comes to recovery straps.

X a billion, i carried a 100,000lb capacity 4" when i used to mud my 80`. never good when you break a tow rope. :nonod:

I have one that's a tow (loop ends; 5,667lbs safe work load; 17,000lbs break strength; 20') and a recovery (hook ends; not sure of the rating, its outside in the truck and stays in the truck).

I think the loop ends are supposed to be stronger, but hook ends are more universal. The only way to use a loop strap like a hook is if you pull all 20+ feet of the strap through the loop to wrap it around something.

It's nice to have both to keep your options open. (I've only used my hook one twice and both times it was on dry pavement)

WRONG!

You NEVER do that with the strap. Use shackles, like you're supposed to.

The strongest strap in the world is no better than what you attach it to... at both ends!

Something to keep in mind.

You do when there's no other way... Such as the shackles not fitting, or being in a different truck... :uhoh:
